Career Planning - Session 3
Welcome back to my three part series on personal career planning.
Congratulations. Not only is today Friday, but it is also the part of the series where you get to put the items you have worked on into action.
Recapping from yesterday, you have a list of common items and a few individual items that are now ready to be worked to move you forward. So, let's get to it.
For each of the gaps you identified I want you to start listing what task needs to be done to close the gap. If you need to take a class, where will you take it and by when? If you need a skill (let's say typing) what actions will you take and by when? If you need to get a degree, what steps will you be taking today, tomorrow, next week to move you forward? Once you complete this now lay out your plan for the next 6 months. There should be a good blend of activities spanning the coming days and weeks.
Once you have done it, sign your name at the bottom and commit to take action today. Remember, if you don't take action then don't expect things to happen.
The last thing you need to do is review the plan. On your calendar set 30 minutes aside for your self at 30, 60 and 90 days out to review your plan. As CEO, you are accountable to yourself and need to ensure you make progress, remember that. During this meeting check your actions and commitments. Celebrate the successes and if you didn't hit the mark, adjust the schedule and get back on track. At 90 days I also want you to reassess the 3 jobs you chose and make sure they still align with what you want. If they don't go back and start the process again to lay out your next 90 days.
And with that, you are well on your way to enhancing your skills and moving your way toward that career you want. And with that I will leave you with the following quote!
“You're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So... get on your way!”
― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You'll Go!
